Thigh Highs
Are you looking for thigh high hosiery? There are many to choose from including stay up or garter stockings, pantyhose, over the knee nylons and pantyhose, and the newest addition, thigh high socks. Hosiery also comes in different thicknesses from almost transparent and opaque to thick.
You can get hosiery in a variety of different materials. Nylon, silk, wool and cashmere are a few choices. The stretchier the hosiery is the more material is used in them.
Different Types of Stockings
Demi Toe or Reinforced Toe Hosiery - On the other hand, if you're wearing a closed toe shoe then you'll probably want to choose a reinforced toe and heel. This will add 50% more strength so you won't be replacing your hosiery so often.
Sandal Foot - If you're wearing sandals or peep toe shoes you may want to wear sandle foot stockings and hose. This means that the toe and heel area are free from reinforcements. So you won't get that showing through open toed shoes. The unfortunate part is that you'll be replacing your hose more often since your heel and toes will cause these areas to break.
Stay Ups vs Garter Thigh High Stockings - The stay up stockings have a band of silicone under the lace band around the thigh. This is what hold them up nice and snug and what hold them up. On the other hand, the garter stocking with a sheer band don't have the silicone and must be held up with a garter. These are the right ones to get if you're wearing garters with them.
Please note that it's very difficult to take your silicone stay up thigh high and wear them with a garter since the band is too thick to attach the garter. So when shopping for thigh highs look for either the the words "stay up" or "garter stocking" on the package. Normally if they are the stockings to be worn with garters than they'll have a garter on the package. If the stockings are stay ups than the picture on the package will show the stockings worn without the garter.
Also if it's really hot out you may find that the stay up stockings become very sweaty and may even irritate your skin. If you are larger in the thigh area you may find them tight and uncomfortable. Garter stockings on the other hand, have much more stretch and don't become sweaty in hot weather.
Seamed Stockings - This type has more of a vintage look to them. They have a visible seam that runs vertically up and down the back of the leg. The seam can be a regular black seam, other bright colors or rhinestone studs or other decorative attachments.
Cuban Heel - These are very similar to the seamed stocking except that there's a darker square at the top of the heel area.
Fishnets and Fence Net - Other popular picks are fishnets which are an open woven knit which looks much like a fishnet. A Fence net is another version of the fishnet with larger gaps in between the fabric.
Black Hose - An important staple in any woman’s wardrobe. There are several different styles and thickness of black hosiery including matte, shiny, sheer, opaque and ultra sheer.
Plus Size and Queen Size Hosiery - They have their own specialized brands now. Here is a list of some popular queen and xl size brands.
Thigh High Socks - These are a trendy new look. If you're daring, you can wear them as is with a skirt, short or dress. For a less daring look, they look very stylish under a pair of tights. Here's more info on how to pick out a pair of thigh socks and match them to an outfit.
